Buttons
My son, age 6, is very creative and a problem solver. As a mother of four (that’s my excuse and I am sticking to it) I have the ability to tune out most noise and focus on whatever it is that I am focusing on. Like most children, he needs me most when I am talking on the phone. As soon as I pick it up, he is jumping around, waving his arms, tugging my sleeve, chanting “Mommmm, I NEED you” and in general being totally obnoxious trying to gain my attention. And I am equally obnoxious trying to ignore him.
Recently he realized that an effective way to change my focus to him is to push my buttons. Yes, the two buttons located on my chest! It works. Instantly my attention is on him.
